a memorial to three people who passed away in 2011 who were not only great musicians,
but great people as well. They were Christopher Cameron, Barry Craig (A
Produce), and Richard Lainhart. I just wanted to honor them with some of

Hi -

My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a
New Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is a 3700 watt non -
commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater Hudson
Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been on for over 24 years and
has a large and devoted audience. The show airs every Sunday from 9AM to
12 noon EST. For more information or to listen in online, check out our
website at www.wvkr.org. I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting
music to play on my show. If you have something you think I'd be
interested in, feel free to send it to the address below or email me for
more info. If you're a local musician or just passing through the
beautiful Hudson Valley region and you'd like to stop by for a live
interview and/or performace, drop me a line and we'll work something out.
Also, if you'd like to send me downloads of your releases in lieu of
actual CD's, that's fine with me, too. Just send me an email and let me

Well, 2011 is over. It was a good year for music, and for my show as
well. Got to see a lot of great shows. The standouts were Darren Bergstein's Equinoxygen festival, The Musical Box performing Genesis' The Lamb Lies Down On
Broadway, Julianna Barwick, Candyrat Guitar Night Live, Erdem Helvacioglu,
and Blackmore's Night.

I also got to host some great live performances on Secret Music this
year, most notably Air Sculpture, Symmetry, Northern Valentine, Alpha Wave Movement, and Ed Gerhard. And some really nice people came in to do interviews, including
Meg Bowles, Shane King, Rick Cutler, Robin Storey of Rapoon, Darren
Bergstein, Vic Rek, and Jimmy Goodman of A Viberatto. One of the busiest
years in recent memory. I love hosting interviews and performances as it
gives me a chance to meet the people who make the music.

The past year held tragedy as well. Barry Craig of A Produce passed
away, along with Christopher Cameron of Thought Guild. And on New Year's Eve, I received the sad news that Richard Lainhart had also passed away. I didn't really
know Barry apart from his music and the occasional email, but Christopher
and Richard were local musicians and were not only incredibly talented,
but great people as well. I considered both of them to be my friends and
their passing hit me hard.

My 25th anniversary of Secret Music is coming up in 2012, and the one
thing that keeps coming back to me after all this time is that it's less about the music and more about the people you meet along the way. Will Ackerman told me
once years ago that what he remembers most about Michael Hedges isn't what
a fantastic guitar player he was, but what a great human being he was. I
understand what Will was talking about now. When I think about people like
Christopher and Richard, I remember what it was like to know them as
people more than anything else. I consider myself blessed that I've come
to know so many people over the years.

There's a new service out called DAR.fm. which allows you to record
radio shows (like mine). The website has more info. but it's basically a free service much like a Tivo, which allows you to select and record radio shows for future listening. Finally something for those of you who aren't around to listen
in on a Sunday morning.

I have a special show planned for Sunday, January 8, 2012. It will be a memorial to three great musicians and great human beings who passed away in 2011.

Richard Lainhart was an incredibly talented musician who used some unconventional instruments to create some truly beautiful music. He was a Hudson Valley resident who had been a guest on my show a couple of years back. He passed away suddenly in late December. Here's a link to his website.

Christopher Cameron was a talented electronic musician who went unnoticed throughout his life. He performed in several groups, including Thought Guild, Expansion Project, and TGXT. He was very humble and easygoing, and was a truly nice person. He passed away suddenly in the fall. Here's a link to a tribute site.

Barry Craig made music for a number of years under the name of A Produce. He was a talented musician, and released music in beautiful packaging on his own Trance Port label. He passed away this past summer. Here's a link to his website.

Richard Lainhart RIP

I was shocked and saddened to learn of the death of a great musician and friend, Richard Lainhart, who passed away suddenly on December 30, 2011. He was incredibly talented not only in electronic music, but in the visual arts. He was very prolific, performing live often and released a number of CD's. But what I remember most about Richard is what a nice guy he was. He was very helpful and giving to anyone who asked. I met him a few years back at an Electro Music festival. I'd emailed him in the past about his music with no response. We talked a while, and he was very friendly. He gave me several CD's to play, and I invited him to play live on my show, which he did one winter a couple of years back. He lived in Rockland county, so it took him a little over an hour to get to the studio. But it snowed that morning, and it took him almost 4 hours to get home in the bad weather. I felt terrible about it, but he thought nothing of it. He was one of the nicest people I've met in all my years as a DJ. Long ago I realized that after all these years at Secret Music, it's become less about the music and more about the people I've met along the way. Richard was one of those people that honored me with his presence. I'll miss him greatly. Here's a link so you can find out more about him.

Here's some info on two upcoming shows those of you in the Secret Music listening area might be interested in.

The first is a concert in NYC on Sunday, October 30 (my birthday!) by a new group called A Winged Victory For The Sullen. The group is a duo consisting of Adam Wiltzie of Stars Of The Lid and Dustin O'Halloran, who had a great album earlier this year called Lumiere. They have a new album out on Kranky and it's fantastic. I'll be going to this one if anyone wants to go.

The other show is a concert by British retro Berlin School electronic group Air Sculpture. They'll be appearing at Darren Bergstein's One Thousand Pulses house concert series on Saturday, November 5. I've never seen them live before, so this ought to be fun.

I want to tell you about a new service for all of you who want to record my radio show. DAR.FM is a free service that allows you to sign up for and record radio programs (including mine). Once you sign up, you select a program to record and it will record it for you for future listening, sorta like Tivo. You have to select it before the date you wish to record (no going back and recording past shows, sorry). You can then listen online, or even download. Christopher Cameron of Thought Guild has passed away

I am saddened to tell you that Christopher Cameron has passed away on August 22, 2011 at the age of 44. I was shocked when Darren told me the news. I knew Chris a little, as we'd met on a few occasions and corresponded over the years. The most important thing I can say about him is that he was genuinely a kind soul and a nice person. Intelligent, kind, open minded, and a good sense of humor. He also happened to be a gifted musician who was all too humble about his talent. In addition to his work with Greg Kyryluk as Thought Guild, he released an album with Jim Cole and John Boiano as Expansion Project, and an album with Robert Dauphineis as TGXT, both of which I heartily recommend. Perhaps his best work has yet to see the light of day. Over a year ago, he gave me a CD of music he'd been working on. He wasn't sure if it was ready, or if he was happy with the results, and wanted my opinion. I told him it was brilliant space music as is, and didn't need any improving. A great human being, and a talented musician, who left us way too soon. Good luck, Christopher.

Sad news about Barry Craig (A Produce)

Barry Craig, also known to the ambient world as A Produce, died this weekend after a short illness. He made music for a long time, releasing it first on his own Trance Port label and then on the Hypnos label. He was a truly nice guy and a great musician. One of the things I knew about him is that he was a big fan of Jackson Browne, as I am. I thought of this song of Jackson's, and it makes sense to post it here, in remembrance of Barry. RIP, Barry.

Electro Music Festival 2011 September 9-11, 2011

I want to call your attention to a festival of electronic music coming up that's practically in my backyard. It's about an hour or so drive for many of my listeners and should be loads of fun. The Electro Music festival is a 3 day event, with tons of concerts, lectures and workshops during those 3 days. You meet great people, see great music and learn a lot along the way. And it's fun. Where to start? The last couple of months have been frustrating in some
ways. My desktop computer died (fortunately, I had a backup). This seriously messed up my email capacity for a while. I managed to make the change to Gmail, but now
I've finally got the desktop working properly again, so it's back to the
old email program. Basically, there are two email addresses that work for me:

Either one is fine for me, though I may go over to Gmail at some point.

In September, WVKR will have its annual fundraiser, right after Labor
Day. We're a non-commercial college station that gets some funding from the college, but we rely on listener donations to keep us going. If any of you want to help
out by donating CD"s or other stuff we can give to people as premiums,
it'd be greatly appreciated. Email me for more info.

I'm looking to book some live interviews/performances for the show in
the upcoming months. If you're in the area and want to come by on a Sunday morning, let me know and we'll work something out.

Since this is my 25th year, I've got some ideas in the works for my 25th
anniversary in June, 2012. I'll have more info in either September or October, but
interested parties (especially local musicians) can contact me directly.

There's a couple of upcoming shows in the area that I recommend to
anyone who enjoys electronic music. The first is Electro Music 2011, which is September 9-11 near Port Jervis, NY. It's a lot of fun and there'll be a lot of great

presented by Darren
Bergstein of the One Thousand Pulses house concert series. It's on

My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a New Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is a 3700 watt non - commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater Hudson Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been on for over 24 years and has a large and devoted audience. The show airs every Sunday from 9AM to 12 noon EST. It's been a while, which bears some explaining. Back in late May, my desktop computer died. Hard drive, I'm guessing. Fortunately, I had everything important backed up. Still not a lot of fun. Thought I had it figured out, but then what I think is the motherboard started acting up. So the desktop still isn't working properly and I'm relying on a 5+ year old laptop. Now since 1995, I've been relying on a great little email program called Pegasus Mail for most of my email needs. That's what I use for the newage@secretmusic.net address. Except for some reason, I can't send mail from the laptop using that address. I've been using Gmail for a couple of years and all is well so far, so I figured I'd make the change to web based email. This way I can check it from anywhere. The newage@secretmusic.net address is still active, and perhaps one day I'll be able to send email from it again. But I'd appreciate it if you'd start using this one, as this is the one I'll be using for present and future correspondence. It's a huge change, as I had to manually enter over 300 contact names and emails. But if you're reading this, then it succeeded.

What's been going on? I had lots of interviews in May. Thanks to Rapoon (Robin Storey) for coming in for an interview before going back to England. Thanks to Vic Rek for coming in again for an interview before moving to Poland (I'm starting to see a pattern here). And thanks to the great guys from the Candyrat Guitar Night Live tour for taking some of their time for an interview. I'm looking for more live interviews and performances. Drop me a line and we'll work something out.

I celebrated my 24th anniversary of Secret Music back in June, too. Doesn't seem like that long, really. I'm already looking ahead to my 25th anniversary in June, 2012. Hopefully the world doesn't end before then. I'm looking at putting together a CD compilation of music to commemorate the event. The initial thought is to feature local music (as there's a lot of it), but if I get enough interest (and especially enough funding), I may expand my horizons. If you'd like to help, here's what I could use. First, someone who can provide me with the necessary documentation to do this, especially as I have to do it as a non-profit in order to promote it properly. Second, someone, preferably local, who can help me get it ready for duplication. Third, I'm likely to use Kickstarter as a source of funding, so anyone with experience there would be helpful. And last but not least, submissions, particularly from local artists. I'll be reaching out to some people once I figure out how to do it, but I may be forgetting someone. Email me for info.

I'm also looking ahead to WVKR's annual fundraiser, which is in early September (right after Labor Day). WVKR gets some funding from Vassar College, but not enough to pay the bills. So our fundraiser is an important event here. Anyone who wants to help can gladly do so by sending me CD's and other such goodies for use as premiums. I'm pretty open to suggestion for alternatives to CD's too. Just email me and we'll work something out.

I've increased my online presence. In addition to my blog, I now have two Facebook pages. One for the show itself, and a personal page where I can better connect with all of you. world premiere of a performance by Northern Valentine. They came up to the area to play a concert Friday night, and the next morning they came into the studio to
record something for us before going back home. The WVKR Sessions piece is

commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater Hudson
Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been on for over 23 years and
has a large and devoted audience. The show airs every Sunday from 9AM to

I've received word that the next Electro-Music festival has been
scheduled for early September in Huguenot, NY. If you're a musician who makes electronic music or even just a fan, I strongly urge you to go to this festival. Three days of playing with strange and new instruments, informative seminars, making

As far as promo copies of music go, I'm always happy to receive CD's.
The surprise factor at finding a package in the mail is always welcome. Though these days, I've been getting more and more downloaded music as well. If you want to
send me music that way, that's perfectly fine. Just let me know. I've had
a couple of musicians ask me about this lately, so I thought I'd see how
others felt. Have you gone to downloads for promo distribution, or are you
sticking with CD's? Have you looked at options like Bandcamp and Dropbox
as a way to distribute them? What sort of response are you getting from
other DJ's? Maybe we can help each other and come up with solutions
together.

a couple of reasons. First, a Poughkeepsie city policeman lost his life in the line of duty earlier in the week, the first time that's happened there since the
1960's. Second, ambient musician Lucette Bourdin passed away suddenly
earlier in the week as well. She was a great talent that was not well

CD's vs. Downloads

I posted this on an online forum, and I thought some of you who don't go to that forum might be interested in reading this. I welcome your comments. - Scott

I've been thinking about this one for a while, and after talking it over with Darren, I've decided to put my $.02 in. It's a bit long winded, but I'll try not to put you to sleep. Honest. We're in a rare situation here as the people who make and sell the music interact closely with the people who buy and enjoy the music. This way, we get to learn from each other, find out what matters to each other. This is obviously a contentious issue and isn't going away anytime soon. It's something that we're all passionate about, from those who don't want CD's to go away, to those who see downloads as the future. Think back to where we were 5 years ago. This wouldn't be as serious a discussion then. 10 years ago, downloads were in their infancy. 15 years ago, I was writing a monthly column for a trade magazine called New Age Voice about the Internet. Back then, it was big news if an artist or label even had a website. Where will we be in 5 years? 10? 15? There's definitely an evolution going on here. I'm not sure where it's headed, but there's still tons of great music being made, and that's what really matters.

As a DJ at an independent radio station, I see a lot of this firsthand. We're in the midst of a years-long project to archive all our CD's onto hard drives. We're not getting rid of CD's, just backing them up and making it easier for those DJ"s that are all digital (yes, there are some). But at the same time, there's still physical media. I see new cassettes from indie bands in our playlist. As Mike pointed out, indie bands are still making 7" singles. And we still get a few vinyl records from time to time. I don't think any of those are making a comeback. I think they're just filling niches. I think physical media will be with us for a while. Collectors like having a physical product to hold. And performing artists need something to sell at concerts. But I think that more and more, physical media will be the niche, and downloads (or perhaps streaming "cloud" music, or something else) will become the norm.

I grew up listening to classic rock on a crappy portable radio, then my dad's 8-tracks, then LP's on my mom's stereo. I went to NYC often on record buying trips in the mid to late 80's and came back with bags full of vinyl that I'd listen to for weeks. I bought my first CD player in 1985. My first CD? Eddie Jobson's Theme Of Secrets. Still one of my all time favorites. I remember the first promo CD an independent artist ever sent to me. That was a big deal at the time. There was a time when the only way independent musicians and labels could release music was on cassette. Now well over half of the music I get comes from downloads, either directly from the artists/labels, or from sites like Emusic or Bandcamp. I love having something to hold in my hands, and the recording quality matters a lot to me. But if the music's good, then the method of delivery isn't as important to me. I listened to my dad's 8-tracks over and over again. As horrible as the sound quality was, I loved the music.

What's been missing from this thread, and most of the others like it that I read, is the economics of the situation from the musician/label point of view. What little I've read, and what people have told me privately (which I won't repeat without permission) scares me. From the sounds of it, CD"s simply aren't selling, unless you're a performing musician. I'd really like to hear more about this. If not sales figures, then at least something that gives me more of an idea how things are going, both for those that rely on CD sales and those that have moved more into downloads. There are a lot more options for musicians/labels these days for download sales. Besides obvious outlets like Itunes and CD Baby, there are others like Emusic and Bandcamp, which I've been using a lot lately. There are different pricing options, even "pay what you want". I'm not addressing the netlabel/free download part of it here, as I want to hear more about the economics. Are musicians/labels still selling CD's? Are downloads selling? What makes more sense financially? We may get upset when a musician or label stops selling CD"s and goes download only, but we have to remember that there's usually an economic reason for it. The more we understand this, the better. There are musicians/labels that have stopped releasing music or have gone on hiatus because it isn't financially viable for them. Sad, but true.

From the listeners point of view, we should talk more about the value of music. With so many people illegally downloading music online, the big worry is that music will have no value. We need to look at what we value about music, and how we can retain that value. Collectors find value in a physical product, and don't find value in what's essentially a file on their hard drive. That's fine, but if one of your favorite musicians releases a download only project, will you ignore it because it has no value to you? In another forum, a band released an album of music as a free download as a thank you for their fans. And someone was upset because they didn't offer it for sale as a CD. To me, he's missing the point. It was a gift, and a nice one at that. I downloaded it, loved it, and am playing it on my show. When O Yuki Conjugate released The Euphoria Of Disobedience, their first album in something like 10 years, I wanted it. I'm a huge fan. And since I couldn't get a promo copy, I had to choose between spending $30 for a limited edition release in special packaging, or get it from Emusic (which cost something like $2). The economics of the situation forced me to go with Emusic. And it still blew me away. I value my download files as much as I do my CD"s. And though I get lots of promos, I still buy music sometimes, when I can't get an album any other way. And lately the economics of my situation mean that if I can get a download for less, than I will.

The economics from the listener point of view (and I still consider myself one) is that most of us have very limited budgets. MOre and more, we have to look for the value in any product. CD's might not be going away, but more and more artists and labels are turning to downloads. As a listener, will you spend your money on a CD? Or will you opt for a download? What are you willing to forgo, a physical product, or the music itself? IN my case, I want to hear the music. If it's a CD, great. If it's a download, that's fine too. If you opt for downloads, you have to accept that some artists/labels prefer releasing CD's. Perhaps if enough of you speak up on the subject, they will offer downloads *cough* Hypnos *cough*. If you want a CD, you have to accept that certain albums may only be available as a download. Again, if enough of you speak up on the subject, perhaps they will listen and offer a CD. And the musicians/labels out there need to decide which way to go. If it's financially viable to keep releasing CD's, great. If it's a download release, then still make it something people will value. Some labels may find a niche releasing download albums on CD. Others may find that releasing CD's is simply no longer a viable option for them. It isn't easy for either side, musician/labels or listeners. The more we understand each other, the better we'll all get through this.

My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a
New Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is a 3700 watt non
- commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater
Hudson Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been on for over 23
years and has a large and devoted audience. The show airs every Sunday
from 9AM to 12 noon EST. For more information or to listen in online,
check out our website at www.wvkr.org. I'm always on the lookout for new
and interesting music to play on my show. If you have something you think
I'd be interested in, feel free to send it to the address below or email

Another year is over. This has been a very difficult year for me. The
recession has hit me pretty hard. but I'm still here, and there's still
plenty of great music to play. I'm glad to be here, and I'm glad for all the musicians and labels who have provided me with such great music over the
past year. And I'm especially glad to have such great listeners who have
enjoyed my work through the years. I hope everyone had a great holiday season
and I wish everyone a happy New Year.

I've got a couple of upcoming events to announce. On January 16, 2011,
pianist Rick Cutler will be live on my show to promote his new CD, First
Melancholy, Then The Night Stretch. Then on January 30, keyboardist/vibes
player Jimmy Goodman of A Viberatto will be in to talk about his CD A, which

The surprise factor at finding a package in the mail is always welcome.

With the new year coming, I've increased my online presence. In addition

Hi -

This time around I'm going to combine both months and present some of the best of both. For September, it's one album and a label. And for October, it's two albums.

The first is the new album from David Helpling and Jon Jenkins, called The Crossing on the Spotted Peccary label. Both are long time ambient musicians. David's style is more reminiscent of Patrick O'Hearn, and Jon has done various ambient styles. The new album is upbeat and rhythmic, with great sounds and outstanding production. The next is a label from the Netherlands, Groove Unlimited. For many years they've been releasing the best in European electronic music of all styles. They've got a lot of great music from a variety of artists. Whenever I see a package arrive from Groove with new CD's, I know I'm in for something good. And they've also got a mail order site if you're looking for other electronic music, too. Check them out here:

Next up is an artist whose work I've admired for a long time, Ryuichi Sakamoto. He got his start as part of the pioneering Japanese electronic pop music group Yellow Magic Orchestra, but went out on his own and has released many albums of electronic pop and soundtrack work. I saw him in concert ages ago and he put on a great show. I've always loved his solo piano work, as it's very personal, though very well played. His new album is a 2 CD set. Playing The Piano is a solo piano album with reworkings of some of his best soundtrack pieces with some new songs added in. Out Of Noise is bolder, with Ryuichi's piano combined with more experimental electronics. It's good to hear something new and wonderful like this from him.

Last is an artist I've come to know recently but like a lot, Slow Dancing Society. His music has that languid, post rock ambient sound I've really started to appreciate of late. Very simple, yet very evocative and emotional. The new album, Under The Sodium Lights, is perhaps the best yet. Well done and highly recommended.

Hi -

Here's my playlist for last Sunday, 9/12/10. Would've gotten this up
sooner, but I've been sick. This was a special event, as it was the week
of WVKR's annual fundraiser. All the music I played was from CD's I had
to give away in exchange for people's donations. This year I made $1000,
which made me happy. They made me sweat for it this time, though. $750 of
that number came in the last hour. It was well worth it, though. Many thanks
to all those who called in and to all those that contributed CD's for premiums.

Hi -

Here's my playlist for Sunday, August 29, 2010. This was kind of a
special idea, sparked by a discussion in an online newsgroup (the ambient@hyperreal list)concerning women in ambient music. I've always felt that there weren't
enough of them, but lately the idea's been spinning around in my head. So
I decided to devote an entire show to it. After some dredging of my
collection, this is what I came up with. The albums and pieces played were
mostly "in the moment", with very little pre-planning. And they're not all
strictly solo artists, either. I used a few duos (and in one case a trio)
where the woman was integral to the sound, not just a supporting player.
There are old and new artists, some you might know, some you might not.
There's a few I invariably missed, though that means I'll have to do
another sometime. If I missed anyone really important, let me know. And if
you have any questions or comments, let me know. Thanks to all on the
Ambient Hyperreal list who stuck the idea in my head.

Featured Artists: August 2010

Hi -

This month I have two featured artists, one from right here in the Hudson Valley, and two record labels.

First is A Viberatto, a group based in the Hudson Valley. It features Jimmy Goodman on vibraphone, piano and synths, and a bunch of session people, including luminaries like Tony Levin and Garth Hudson. He calls it "chamber rock", though I'd call it more modern chamber music, akin to the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. I only wish the pieces were longer. Still, this is beautiful stuff. Second is a man who needs little introduction in the world of ambient music, Steve Roach. He's one of the early pioneers of ambient music, having been around for well over 20 years. My discovery of his music early on certainly helped define the types of music I play on my show. He's also one of the most prolific artists, releasing several CD's a year. His newest, Sigh Of Ages, is a bit different. It's still identifiable as Steve, but it's a bit more majestic, more elegaic than usual for him. I like it a lot. For more info, check out his website.

The first record label this time around is Palace Of Lights Records. PoL has actually been around a long time, since the early 80's. It served mainly as a vehicle for the music of Kerry Leimer, but also included albums from a few others. The label vanished in the mid-80's, presumably never to be seen again. But Palace Of Lights resurfaced in 2002, with CD reissues of the early K.Leimer albums and new work as well. Since then, they've released a couple of albums a year, primarily of introspective ambient music. This time, there's three new CD's, from K.Leimer, Marc Barreca, and Gregory Taylor. The other record label feature this month is Candy Rat Records. First, I love the name. Second, they're a label of guitar music. There are a few jazz/rock/folk albums, but primarily it's solo acoustic guitar. It's one of the few labels left that presents solo acoustic guitar music, and certainly the most innovative.
