Power (and the lack thereof)

Hi -

In case of you are wondering, I took last week off (Sunday, 2/21) to take care of some personal things. As for this week (Sunday, 2/28), I won't be in as well. For those of you not following local news, we got walloped by a monster snowstorm that knocked out power to much of the area, including my home and the mountain where WVKR's transmitter is located. No word yet on when power will be back to either location, though it'll probably be several days. I'm staying with friends (yay friends!), so I'm ok, but WVKR is off the air for now. Even the webcast is intermittent at best. My best wishes to anyone affected by this storm. I know all too well. I'll be back home soon, and WVKR will be back on the air soon. Stay tuned.

Secret Music Playlist, February 14, 2010

Hi -

Here's my playlist for Sunday, February 14, 2010. Happy Valentine's Day to
everyone. Discovered some nice ambient music from the Dragon's Eye label on our
new music playlist, so I decided to play some. Great stuff. I'll have to
investigate further. Enjoy.

Secret Music Top 20 January 2010

Hi -

My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a
New Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is a 3700 watt non
- commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater
Hudson Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been on for over 22
years and has a large and devoted audience. The show airs every Sunday
from 9AM to 12 noon EST. For more information or to listen in online,
check out our website at www.wvkr.org. I'm always on the lookout for new
and interesting music to play on my show. If you have something you think
I'd be interested in, feel free to send it to the address below or email
me for more info. If you're a local musician or just passing through the
beautiful Hudson Valley region and you'd like to stop by for a live
interview and/or performace, drop me a line and we'll work something out.
Also, if you'd like to send me downloads of your releases in lieu of
actual CD's, that's fine with me, too. Just send me an email and let me
know. Thanks.

It's a snowy day here in NY, so I thought I'd do some catching up.
Several things to tell you about this time. First, I finally have a website.
It's a blog, really, but I put up weekly and monthly playlists and occasionally ramble on about other things as well. I hope you all will take a look.

Next, I'd like to thank guitarist Alexander Turnquist for coming down to
play live on my show January 24. He's an immensely talented guitarist who lives right here in the Hudson Valley. Check out his website for more info.

I'd also like to feature a new concert series of electronic music in
northern New Jersey. It's hosted by Darren Bergstein of i/e and e/i magazine
fame in his home. He just had his first concert, and he's got a whole bunch
lined up over the next several months. There are big names, like Robert Rich,
Spyra and Erik Wollo, but plenty of lesser known musicians as well. Check out
his website for more information. Hope to see you there.

That's about it for now. Just trying to stay warm here. Here's my top 20
playlist for January. Enjoy.

Featured Artists: January 2010

Hi -

While I'm in catch up mode, let's continue with my featured artists for January, 2010. First is guitarist Alexander Turnquist. When January started, I didn't know he existed. I found out about him while checking out a concert with guitarist Kelli Rudick where he was the opening act. He sent me a copy of his latest CD, As The Twilight Crane Dreams In Color, and I was instantly hooked. He plays long, dense acoustic guitar pieces in the style of James Blackshaw. He's got an immense amount of talent for someone so young. And he lives right here in the Hudson Valley. I got him to come to the studio to perform live and he played wonderfully. Please check out his website and take a listen to his music.

The next feature for January is the group O Yuki Conjugate. They've been around now for over 25 years, playing ambient music of different styles. In fact, two years ago they reunited to play together and record an album to celebrate their 25th anniversary. That album, OYC25, just came out and not only features an album full of great ambient sounds, but a DVD of various performances and miscellany. Their website seems to be experiencing some difficulties at the moment, but check out their Wikipedia entry, which has a lot of useful info.

And lastly, I'd like to feature the netlabel Earth Mantra, which has been around for a couple of years now. Started by Darrell Burgan of Palancar and StillStream fame, it's all ambient music freely downloadable for your listening enjoyment. I've been a big supporter of the label all along, and they recently released The Hundredth Mantra, a compilation album that includes 4 CD's worth of great sounds. Take a look at their site and enjoy the music.

Featured Artists: December, 2009

It's a snowy day here in NY, so time to catch up on the blog. I've been kicking this idea around for a bit, so here goes. Every month I get lots of great music from lots of great artists. So each month I'm going to spotlight a couple of artists I feel are deserving of more attention. I thought about limiting it to one, but I'd rather give attention to more people. This is a little more subjective, but that's the point.

For December, I'm featuring two artists with ties to the Hudson Valley. First is Richard Lainhart, who's been around for quite a while. My introduction to his music was a CD titled These Last Days, which came out in 1987. He fell off my radar for a while, until I met up with him at the Electro Music 2009 festival. He's got a bunch of albums out, exploring different ambient sounds. He uses everything from early Buchla synthesizers to looped guitar sounds to even making music with his iPhone. I had the pleasure of having him come on the show in December, and he performed a few pieces with guitar and laptop. I urge you to check out his music at his website, O-Town Media.

http://www.otownmedia.com/

The other feature for December is the group Holosphere, which is Greg Waltzer and the Hudson Valley's own Jose Murcia (aka JEM). They both play in other more experimental electronic groups (Greg plays in Xeroid Entity, Fringe Element and Mutation Vector, and Jose plays in Symmetry and Fringe Element), but Holosphere is much spacier and more accessible. They played live on my show back in 2003, and they're still making great music. They have a new CD out called Parallel Universe, which JEM gave me back at the Electro-Music 2009 festival. I hope you'll all take a listen.
