Secret Music News, December 2011

Hi -

My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a New
Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is a 3700 watt non -
commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater Hudson
Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been on for over 24 years and
has a large and devoted audience. The show airs every Sunday from 9AM to
12 noon EST. For more information or to listen in online, check out our
website at www.wvkr.org. I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting
music to play on my show. If you have something you think I'd be
interested in, feel free to send it to the address below or email me for
more info. If you're a local musician or just passing through the
beautiful Hudson Valley region and you'd like to stop by for a live
interview and/or performace, drop me a line and we'll work something out.
Also, if you'd like to send me downloads of your releases in lieu of
actual CD's, that's fine with me, too. Just send me an email and let me
know. Thanks.

Saw a couple of great shows this past month. Got to see Air Sculpture play
live at Darren Bergstein's One Thousand Pulses house concert series. They put on a great show. And I got to see one of my all time favorite albums performed live,
too. Tribute band The Musical Box performed the Genesis album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway in its entirety in NYC, complete with costumes, slides, effects, etc. Amazing show.

Some good stuff on the show this past month, too. Air Sculpture came up
and performed live on my radio show the day after the One Thousand Pulses concert
and played live for about an hour. Really wonderful improvised electronic
music. And Greg Kyryluk of Alpha Wave Movement came down from Massachusetts to
talk and even played live, too. It was great to see him again. And coming up on Sunday, December 18, JEM of Symmetry, Holosphere and various other musical
endeavors will be in the studio to talk and to play live for us.

There's a new service out called DAR.fm. which allows you to record radio shows (like mine). The website has more info. but it's basically a free service much like a Tivo, which allows you to select and record radio shows for future listening. Finally something for those of you who aren't around to listen in on a Sunday morning.

For more info or weekly playlists, check out my website below. I'm also on Facebook, so look for me there too. Here's my top 20 playlist for November 2011. Enjoy!

Upcoming Secret Music Events, December 2011

Hi -

On December 18, 2011 my guest will be JEM of Symmetry, Holosphere and other such musical endeavors. He's been playing electronic music for a long time and he'll be talking to us, playing some new recorded material and also playing live for us.

At this point, I probably won't be around for the December 25th show, as I'll be visiting my mother on Cape Cod.

But I'll be back for the January 1, 2012 show, which will be my Best of 2011 retrospective show.

Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

Haven't seen any great shows lately. Was supposed to see A Winged
Victory For The Sullen in NYC this past weekend, but the weather ruined that idea. But I do get to see Air Sculpture this weekend at Darren Bergstein's One
Thousand Pulses house concert series. Really looking forward to it.

Thanks so much to Shane King for making the trip up from NYC on his bike
to be a guest on my show in October. Didn't get to do my Halloween special due to snow. Snow on my birthday. Grrr... But I make up for it by having Air Sculpture
on my show this Sunday for a live interview and performance. And later
this month, Greg of Alpha Wave Movement comes back for a live interview.
Will be nice to see him again.

First, we had our annual pledge drive in September, and I raised over $ 500. Thanks to all the listeners that called in, and thanks to all the labels and musicians who contributed CD's to the cause. It makes a difference and I'm grateful
to all of you.

Second, I got to see two great shows this past month. The first was
Electro Music 2011, in Huguenot, New York. It's a fun place, with lots of people I know, and great music as well. The other was Equinoxygen 2011, in Hackensack, New
Jersey. This was a one day event showcasing all different kinds of electronic music. I helped with setup and breakdown, and all the little things to do during the course of the day. And saw a lot of great music, too. The highlight was Neil Nappe, who hadn't performed in over 10 years, and put on an amazing performance. Thanks to Darren Bergstein for making it happen.

I've got some interesting upcoming events here at Secret Music. On
October 16, Shane King of redgreenblue will be my guest, playing music from his CD's. And in November, I will be hosting interviews with both Air Sculpture and Alpha
Wave Movement. Stay tuned for more details.

Upcoming Secret Music Events

Hi -

There's some interesting stuff coming up in the next couple of months on Secret Music, so stay tuned.

First, on Sunday, October 16, I welcome Shane King of redgreenblue to the studio, to talk about his music and play from his CD's. He's a great guy and fun to talk to. Should be a great time. Here's a link to his website:

http://shanekingweb.com/Site/redgreenblue/redgreenblue.html

Next, on Sunday, October 30 will be my annual scary Halloween music special. Lots of really creepy sounds for you on a Sunday morning. And it's my birthday, too. Let me know if you have anything special you want to hear that day.

After that, on Sunday, November 6, I'm likely to have special guests Air Sculpture in the studio. We're still working out the details, but they'll be here to talk or play live, depending on how things go. Here's a link to their website.

http://www.airsculpture.com/

Finally, on Sunday, November 27, Greg Kyryluk of Alpha Wave Movement will be my guest on the show. He's been around for a long time and has a large body of interesting electronic music that he's produced. Here's a link to his website.

Upcoming Concerts

Hi -

Here's some info on two upcoming shows those of you in the Secret Music listening area might be interested in.

The first is a concert in NYC on Sunday, October 30 (my birthday!) by a new group called A Winged Victory For The Sullen. The group is a duo consisting of Adam Wiltzie of Stars Of The Lid and Dustin O'Halloran, who had a great album earlier this year called Lumiere. They have a new album out on Kranky and it's fantastic. I'll be going to this one if anyone wants to go.

http://www.awvfts.com/

The other show is a concert by British retro Berlin School electronic group Air Sculpture. They'll be appearing at Darren Bergstein's One Thousand Pulses house concert series on Saturday, November 5. I've never seen them live before, so this ought to be fun.

DAR .FM

Hi -

I want to tell you about a new service for all of you who want to record my radio show. DAR.FM is a free service that allows you to sign up for and record radio programs (including mine). Once you sign up, you select a program to record and it will record it for you for future listening, sorta like Tivo. You have to select it before the date you wish to record (no going back and recording past shows, sorry). You can then listen online, or even download. I haven't tried it yet, but it still sounds like a great idea. Here's a direct link, as well as a link to the main site itself. Enjoy!

18, 2011. Both shows were special events. September 11 was my portion of our annual
pledge drive. This year I did over $500 in pledges. Many thanks to all who
called in, and all who provided me with CD"s for use as premiums. And on
September 18, I had special guest Darren Bergstein of the One Thousand
Pulses house concert series in the studio to talk about his upcoming
electronic music festival, Equinoxygen 2011, taking place on Saturday,
October 1, 2011 at the Fairleigh Dickinson University in Hackensack, NJ.
Should be a great show and I hope to see a lot of people there. I'll be
taking a break Sunday, September 25, but I'll be back on Sunday, October 2
with lots of great music. Enjoy!

Christopher Cameron of Thought Guild has passed away

I am saddened to tell you that Christopher Cameron has passed away on August 22, 2011 at the age of 44. I was shocked when Darren told me the news. I knew Chris a little, as we'd met on a few occasions and corresponded over the years. The most important thing I can say about him is that he was genuinely a kind soul and a nice person. Intelligent, kind, open minded, and a good sense of humor. He also happened to be a gifted musician who was all too humble about his talent. In addition to his work with Greg Kyryluk as Thought Guild, he released an album with Jim Cole and John Boiano as Expansion Project, and an album with Robert Dauphineis as TGXT, both of which I heartily recommend. Perhaps his best work has yet to see the light of day. Over a year ago, he gave me a CD of music he'd been working on. He wasn't sure if it was ready, or if he was happy with the results, and wanted my opinion. I told him it was brilliant space music as is, and didn't need any improving. A great human being, and a talented musician, who left us way too soon. Good luck, Christopher.

Here's a couple of useful links, with a little more information. I'll post more as I find out.

Sad news about Barry Craig (A Produce)

Barry Craig, also known to the ambient world as A Produce, died this weekend after a short illness. He made music for a long time, releasing it first on his own Trance Port label and then on the Hypnos label. He was a truly nice guy and a great musician. I never knew him personally, but corresponded with him a little bit through the years. If you want to find out more about his passing and his music, go to the Hypnos Forum here:

http://www.hypnos.com/smf/index.php?topic=4199.0

One of the things I knew about him is that he was a big fan of Jackson Browne, as I am. I thought of this song of Jackson's, and it makes sense to post it here, in remembrance of Barry. RIP, Barry.

For A Dancer

Keep a fire burning in your eye
Pay attention to the open sky
You never know what will be coming down

I don't remember losing track of you
You were always dancing in and out of view
I must've always thought you'd be around
Always keeping things real by playing the clown
Now you're nowhere to be found

I don't know what happens when people die
Can't seem to grasp it as hard as I try
It's like a song playing right in my ear
That I can't sing
I can't help listening

I can't help feeling stupid standing 'round
Crying as they ease you down
'Cause I know that you'd rather we were dancing
Dancing our sorrow away
(Right on dancing)
No matter what fate chooses to play
(There's nothing you can do about it anyway)

Just do the steps that you've been shown
By everyone you've ever known
Until the dance becomes your very own
No matter how close to yours another's steps have grown
In the end there is one dance you'll do alone

Keep a fire for the human race
And let your prayers go drifting into space
You never know will be coming down

Perhaps a better world is drawing near
And just as easily, it could all disappear
Along with whatever meaning you might have found
Don't let the uncertainty turn you around
(The world keeps turning around and around)
Go on and make a joyful sound

Into a dancer you have grown
From a seed somebody else has thrown
Go on ahead and throw some seeds of your own
And somewhere between the time you arrive and the time you go
May lie a reason you were alive but you'll never know

Here's one more upcoming event for you. On October 1, 2011, One Thousand Pulses will present Equinoxygen 2011, a 1 day event of electronic music. There are 10 different performers with a myriad of musical styles. This promises to be a great event, and I'll definitely be there. Electro Music Festival 2011 September 9-11, 2011

Hi -

I want to call your attention to a festival of electronic music coming up that's practically in my backyard. It's about an hour or so drive for many of my listeners and should be loads of fun. The Electro Music festival is a 3 day event, with tons of concerts, lectures and workshops during those 3 days. You meet great people, see great music and learn a lot along the way. And it's fun. If you're a fan of electronic music, I urge you to check this out. It runs from Friday, September 9 to Sunday, September 11 and is held on the grounds of the Greenkill Retreat center in Huguenot, NY. For more info, check out the website below. I'll be there Saturday, and probably Sunday as well. Let me know if you'll be there.

WVKR Pledge Drive Sunday, 9/11/11

Hi -

In case you don't already know, WVKR has its annual pledge drive coming up, starting on Tuesday, 9/6 and going until Monday, 9/12. WVKR is funded in part by Vassar College, but it takes a lot to keep the station going so we can bring you the great programming that we do year after year. My segment of the pledge drive will be on Sunday, September 11, between 9AM and 12 noon EST. I hope many of you will call in and pledge your support for independent radio in the Hudson Valley. I'll have T-shirts, CD's and other goodies for you in exchange for your kind donations. Thanks!

Secret Music News, late August 2011

Hi -

My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a New
Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is a 3700 watt non -
commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater Hudson Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been on for over 24 years and has a large and devoted audience. The show airs every Sunday from 9AM to 12 noon EST. For more information or to listen in online, check out our website at www.wvkr.org. I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting music to play on my show. If you have something you think I'd be interested in, feel free to send it to the address below or email me for more info. If you're a local musician or just passing through the beautiful Hudson Valley region and you'd like to stop by for a live interview and/or performace, drop me a line and we'll work something out. Also, if you'd like to send me downloads of your releases in lieu of actual CD's, that's fine with me, too. Just
send me an email and let me know. Thanks.

I hope everyone is well and enjoying the summer. Been quiet on this end. Coming
soon in September, WVKR will have its annual fundraiser, right after Labor Day. We're a non- commercial college station that gets some funding from the college, but we rely on listener donations to keep us going. If any of you want to help out by donating CD"s or other stuff we can give to people as premiums, it'd be greatly appreciated. Email me for more info.

I'm looking to book some live interviews/performances for the show in the
upcoming months. If you're in the area and want to come by on a Sunday morning, let me know and we'll work something out.

There's a couple of upcoming shows in the area that I recommend to anyone who
enjoys electronic music. I'll be at both, so let me know if you're coming to either.
First is Electro Music 2011, which is September 9-11 near Port Jervis, NY. It's a lot of fun and there'll be a lot of great live music. For more info, here's the website:

http://event.electro-music.com/

The other is Equinoxygen 2011, a one day festival of electronic music presented
by Darren Bergstein of the One Thousand Pulses house concert series. It's on Saturday, October 1 in Hackensack, NJ. The lineup is amazing. For more info, here's the website:

http://onethousandpulses.com/index.php/equinoxygen-festival/

I'm still on Facebook, both as Secret Music and as Scott Raymond. And the
website stays the same, too. Have a look if you want to know more.

Where to start? The last couple of months have been frustrating in some
ways. My desktop computer died (fortunately, I had a backup). This seriously messed up my email capacity for a while. I managed to make the change to Gmail, but now
I've finally got the desktop working properly again, so it's back to the
old email program. Basically, there are two email addresses that work for me:

newage@secretmusic.net
secretmusic09@gmail.com

Either one is fine for me, though I may go over to Gmail at some point.
Sorry for all the confusion. Been confusing on this end, too. I'm still on Facebook, both as Secret Music and as Scott Raymond. And the website stays the same, too:

the upcoming months. If you're in the area and want to come by on a Sunday morning, let me know and we'll work something out.

Since this is my 25th year, I've got some ideas in the works for my 25th
anniversary in June, 2012. I'll have more info in either September or October, but
interested parties (especially local musicians) can contact me directly.

There's a couple of upcoming shows in the area that I recommend to
anyone who enjoys electronic music. The first is Electro Music 2011, which is September 9-11 near Port Jervis, NY. It's a lot of fun and there'll be a lot of great

to talk about. Thanks for reading and here's some playlists. I'm going
back a couple of months just to get people caught up.

Secret Music News, May and June, 2011

Hi -

My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a New Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is a 3700 watt non - commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater Hudson Valley region. If you're a local musician or just passing through the beautiful Hudson Valley region and you'd like to stop by for a live interview and/or performance, drop me a line and we'll work something out. Also, if you'd like to send me downloads of your releases in lieu of actual CD's, that's fine with me, too. Just send me an email and let me know. Thanks.

It's been a while, which bears some explaining. Back in late May, my desktop computer died. Hard drive, I'm guessing. Fortunately, I had everything important backed up. Still not a lot of fun. Thought I had it figured out, but then what I think is the motherboard started acting up. So the desktop still isn't working properly and I'm relying on a 5+ year old laptop. Now since 1995, I've been relying on a great little email program called Pegasus Mail for most of my email needs. That's what I use for the newage@secretmusic.net address. Except for some reason, I can't send mail from the laptop using that address. I've been using Gmail for a couple of years and all is well so far, so I figured I'd make the change to web based email. This way I can check it from anywhere. The newage@secretmusic.net address is still active, and perhaps one day I'll be able to send email from it again. But I'd appreciate it if you'd start using this one, as this is the one I'll be using for present and future correspondence. It's a huge change, as I had to manually enter over 300 contact names and emails. But if you're reading this, then it succeeded.

What's been going on? I had lots of interviews in May. Thanks to Rapoon (Robin Storey) for coming in for an interview before going back to England. Thanks to Vic Rek for coming in again for an interview before moving to Poland (I'm starting to see a pattern here). And thanks to the great guys from the Candyrat Guitar Night Live tour for taking some of their time for an interview. I'm looking for more live interviews and performances. Drop me a line and we'll work something out.

I celebrated my 24th anniversary of Secret Music back in June, too. Doesn't seem like that long, really. I'm already looking ahead to my 25th anniversary in June, 2012. Hopefully the world doesn't end before then. I'm looking at putting together a CD compilation of music to commemorate the event. The initial thought is to feature local music (as there's a lot of it), but if I get enough interest (and especially enough funding), I may expand my horizons. If you'd like to help, here's what I could use. First, someone who can provide me with the necessary documentation to do this, especially as I have to do it as a non-profit in order to promote it properly. Second, someone, preferably local, who can help me get it ready for duplication. Third, I'm likely to use Kickstarter as a source of funding, so anyone with experience there would be helpful. And last but not least, submissions, particularly from local artists. I'll be reaching out to some people once I figure out how to do it, but I may be forgetting someone. Email me for info.

I'm also looking ahead to WVKR's annual fundraiser, which is in early September (right after Labor Day). WVKR gets some funding from Vassar College, but not enough to pay the bills. So our fundraiser is an important event here. Anyone who wants to help can gladly do so by sending me CD's and other such goodies for use as premiums. I'm pretty open to suggestion for alternatives to CD's too. Just email me and we'll work something out.

I've increased my online presence. In addition to my blog, I now have two Facebook pages. One for the show itself, and a personal page where I can better connect with all of you. I hope you'll check them out and add me as a friend, if you haven't done so already. I'll be posting updates there on a more regular basis. Here's the relevant links:

Hi -

Here's my playlists for Sunday, June 5, 2011 and Sunday, June 12, 2011. My
desktop computer is having major issues, so until I rebuild it, I'm using
the trusty old laptop. Hence the different email address. Use this one for
the moment until things are back on track. The big news of the moment is
that on Sunday, June 19, 2011, I will celebrate 24 years of Secret Music.
Been a long time, and I'm happy to have made it this far. If there's a local
musician out there who would like to stop by and help me celebrate, please
let me know. For the rest of you, if you have any requests or ideas for my
anniversary show, let me know. I have some ideas, but more are always
welcome. I have an idea or two for my upcoming 25th anniversary show which
I'll talk about on Sunday. I hope you all get to listen in. Enjoy!

Secret Music Top 20 April 2011

Hi -

My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a
New Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is a 3700 watt non
- commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater
Hudson Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been on for over 23
years and has a large and devoted audience. The show airs every Sunday
from 9AM to 12 noon EST. For more information or to listen in online,
check out our website at www.wvkr.org. I'm always on the lookout for new
and interesting music to play on my show. If you have something you think
I'd be interested in, feel free to send it to the address below or email
me for more info.
Just send me an email and let me
know. Thanks.

Spring is here, and it feels great. It's been a very busy month here at
Secret Music. I had
some great guests come in to the studio. On April 3, guitarist Ed Gerhard
came to play and talk for a while. And on April 10, ambient musician Meg
Bowles came to talk about her music. And on April 17, I premiered a piece
by Northern Valentine that they recorded in the WVKR studios the day
before. I'm very grateful to all of them. And I got to see some good
concerts, too. Got to see Erdem Helvacioglu, who came all the way from
Turkey. Saw Julianna Barwick, and got her autograph. And got to see
Northern Valentine play twice. Once at a local venue, then again the next
day in our studio.

There's some good things coming up in May, both on Secret Music and live
in concert. On
May 8, I'll be interviewing Robin Storey of Rapoon. He's been around a
long time and I'm excited to finally talk to him. And on May 15, Vic Rek
of the Ricochet Dream label will be back to talk about his label and
concert series. Might be the last I see of him for a while. Also, on
Sunday, May 29 I'll be playing a prerecorded interview with guitarists
from the Candy Rat label who will be on tour. And concert-wise, on May
7,Rapoon will be playing in concert as part of the One Thousand Pulses
series in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. Also, Alexander Turnquist will be playing
live with Nils Frahm and Greg Haines to celebrate the release of his new
album on May 13 in Hudson, NY. And the Candyrat Guitar Night will be in
the area for two shows, one in CT on Thursday, May 26, and again in NYC on
Sunday, May 29. More details on my website.

I've increased my online presence. In addition to my blog, I now have two
Facebook pages. One for the show itself, and a personal page where I can
better connect with all of you. I hope you'll check them out and add me as
a friend, if you haven't done so already. I'll be posting updates there on

I've received word that the next Electro-Music festival has been scheduled
for early September in Huguenot, NY. If you're a musician who makes
electronic music or even just a fan, I strongly urge you to go to this
festival. Three days of playing with strange and new instruments,
informative seminars, making new friends and of course, lots and lots of
interesting live music. I always have a great time. make friends, and come
home with bagfuls of CD's to listen to. Here's the info:

Secret Music Playlist, April 17, 2011

Hi -

Here's my playlist for Sunday, April 17, 2011. The big treat today was a
world premiere of a performance by Northern Valentine. They came up to the area to play a concert Friday night, and the next morning they came into the studio to
record something for us before going back home. The WVKR Sessions piece is
the product of that performance. Sounds really good. Thanks so much to Rob
and Jeff for coming to visit. I also played music from Julianna Barwick,
who I also saw play live this past week. More concerts and special guests
coming. Stay tuned and enjoy!

More concerts of interest

Hi -

This coming week is just packed with shows that might be of interest to Secret Music listeners.

Wed. April 13, 2011 - The American Dollar, Heirloom Arts Theatre, Danbury, CT. They're a post-rock instrumental band that has also done ambient albums. This is more likely to be post-rock, but still worth a trip. Here's a link:

http://theamericandollar.info/

Thurs. April 14, 2011 - Julianna Barwick, Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY. I'm not sure where exactly on campus this is, but I'll likely be there. She does vocal-based ambience with lots of overdubs. Hard to describe, but it's great stuff. Here's a link:

Friday, April 15, 2011 - Northern Valentine, Market Market Cafe, Rosendale, NY. Another post-rock band that does ambient music. They're great guys and I like their music a lot. I'll be at this one, too. Here's a link:

Saturday, April 16, 2011 - Tim Motzer, One Thousand Pulses, Woodcliff Lake, NJ. Ambient guitarist from Philadelphia. Should be a lot of fun. Here's a link:

Sunday, April 24, 2011 - Kyle Bobby Dunn, Noveller, Goldmund, and Rafael Anton Irisarri - Le Poisson Rouge, NYC. This is a great lineup of artists in the post-rock ambient field. Wish I could go, but it's a Sunday night. Here's a link:

Secret Music Top 20 March 2011

Hi -

My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a
New Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is a 3700 watt non -
commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater Hudson
Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been on for over 23 years and
has a large and devoted audience.
Just send me an email and let me
know. Thanks.

It's finally spring here in this part of NY, at least. About damn time.
And it's already shaping up to be a very busy spring here at Secret Music. Yesterday (Sunday April 3), guitarist Ed Gerhard stopped by to talk and play for us. What a nice guy he was. And a great guitar player, too. Next Sunday (April 10), I'm
very happy to be interviewing ambient musician Meg Bowles, who has her first new album out in over 10 years. I'm hoping the band Northern Valentine will be stopping by later in the month to record in our studios. And in May, I have interviews with ambient musician Rapoon (Sunday May 8) and Vic Rek of the Ricochet Dream label (Sunday May 15). And I'm working out the details with another interview for later in May, too. Stay tuned. I love doing these, as I get to meet the people who make the music. If you're in the neighborhood and want to stop by, just let me know.

I've increased my online presence. In addition to my blog, I now have
two Facebook pages. One for the show itself, and a personal page where I can better connect with all of you. I hope you'll check them out and add me as a friend, if
you haven't done so already. I'll be posting updates there on a more regular basis. Here's the relevant links:

I've received word that the next Electro-Music festival has been
scheduled for early September in Huguenot, NY. If you're a musician who makes electronic music or even just a fan, I strongly urge you to go to this festival. Three days of playing with strange and new instruments, informative seminars, making
new friends and of course, lots and lots of interesting live music. I always have a great time. make friends, and come home with bagfuls of CD's to listen to. Here's the info:

Here's my top 20 playlist for March, 2011. Enjoy!
