Featured Artists: February 2010
Here's my list of featured artists for February, 2010. This time is a little different, as I'm featuring one artist, one label and a concert series that spawned a series of CD's.
First off, the concert series. The Awakenings concert series in England has been around for several years now. It's a showcase for ambient and electronic music of all sorts. Makes me wish I lived there so I could see all these great shows. Here's the link:
http://www.awakenings-em.co.uk/
For those of us who can't make it to the concerts, they put together CD collections of many of the artists who play at these shows, as well as other artists of a similar nature. These CD collections come out a couple of times a year, and often include songs you won't find on other albums. I always get these when they come out so I can hear some great new music. Here's a link to find out more:
http://www.ambientlive.com/
Next up is a great ambient label, Infraction. Infraction has been around for a few years, releasing ambient and experimental electronic music. The quality of the albums are always top notch. Three of the top 20 albums in my February, 2010 playlist (Parks, Loren Dent and Sleepy Town Manufacture) are Infraction releases. I highly recommend them.
http://www.infractionrecords.com/newsinfraction.html
Lastly, I'd like to mention an artist who has performed on my show before, Daryl Shawn. Daryl was here a few years back with Jim Goodin performing as Chinapainting. Back then, he used old vintage tape recorders to get that Frippertronics kind of sound, but with acoustic guitar. I remember the soundcheck vividly. I couldn't hear his guitar through the monitors, just some sort of garbled noise. I told him this, and he told me that that was his guitar played through the tape loops. He's playing more identifiable guitar sounds lately on his own, and he's immensely talented. Check out his website for more information.

Secret Music Top 20 February 2010
Hi -
My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a
New Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is a 3700 watt non
- commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater
Hudson Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been on for over 22
years and has a large and devoted audience. The show airs every Sunday
from 9AM to 12 noon EST. For more information or to listen in online,
check out our website at www.wvkr.org. I'm always on the lookout for new
and interesting music to play on my show. If you have something you think
I'd be interested in, feel free to send it to the address below or email
me for more info. If you're a local musician or just passing through the
beautiful Hudson Valley region and you'd like to stop by for a live
interview and/or performace, drop me a line and we'll work something out.
Also, if you'd like to send me downloads of your releases in lieu of
actual CD's, that's fine with me, too. Just send me an email and let me
know. Thanks.
It's finally starting to warm up a little here, and none too soon. We
got smacked with a major snowstorm a couple of weeks back that knocked out my power for two days and cut off power to WVKR's transmitter for several days. But things are
back to normal now. About time...
I have a website/blog where I post playlists, etc. Be sure to check it
out for more information. I could also use local concert information as well. If you're a local musician, or just playing locally, send me concert info and I'll
put it up on the blog for all to see. Here's the link:
http://secretmusicwvkr.blogspot.com/
Speaking of concerts, my friend Darren Bergstein has a great new house
concert series at his home in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. Lots of dates coming up, with known and unknown artists. Darren's going to be awfully busy this year, it seems. I
saw Richard Lainhart play there recently, and I'll be back for many more.
Hope to see you there.

Hi -
Here's some upcoming shows those of you in the Hudson Valley area might want to check out.
First, Robert Rich is touring again this spring, the first in a few years. Check him out if you can. His live shows are always great and the new album, Ylang, is fantastic. He'll be in Philadelphia at the Gatherings on Sat.May 1, Hartford, CT on Tuesday, May 4 at the University of Hartford Wilde Auditorium, and Woodcliff Lake, NJ on Saturday May 15 at the One Thousand Pulses house concert series hosted by Darren Bergstein. That's the show to see, really. Nice intimate space. For more info, check out Robert's website:
http://robertrich.com/2010-tour-dates/
Second, check out the One Thousand Pulses concert series for lots of great upcoming shows. Jozef Van Wissem, Eraldo Bernocchi, and Don Slepian in April, Spyra, Robert Rich and Northern Valentine in May, and lots of others, like Malcolm Cecil of Tonto's Expanding Head Band, John Vorus, a Gears Of Sand label night, Jason Sloan, Erik Wollo, and Chuck Van Zyl. Check out the One Thousand Pulses site for more information. I'll be at a bunch of those shows, so I hope to see you there.

Hi -
Here's my playlist for today, Sunday, March 14, 2010. Happy St.Patrick's

Secret Music Playlist, March 7, 2010
Hi -
Back on the air this week after taking a week off and then losing power
to the transmitter after getting pounded by one of the worst snowstorms in recent memory. Lots of new stuff this time, including a wonderful album by Robert Rich,
who will be touring this spring. Got to see Richard Lainhart perform last
night at the One Thousand Pulses concert series hosted by Darren Bergstein
at his home in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. A wonderful show and a
wonderful space. Ironically enough, I got to talk to the man who founded
Periodic Music, who released Richard's early work and the work of Sergio
Cervetti, whose work was used in the soundtrack to Natural Born Killers.
