For Shana...
That Girl Could Sing
by Jackson Browne
She was a friend to me when I needed one
Wasn't for her I don't know what I'd done
She gave me back something that was missing in me
She could have turned out to be almost anyone
Almost anyone...
With the possible exception
Of who I wanted her to be
Running into the midnight
With her clothes whipping in the wind
Reaching into the heart of the darkness
For the tenderness within
Stumblin' into the lights of the city
And then back in the shadows again
Hanging onto the laughter
That each of us hid our unhappiness in
Talk about celestial bodies
And your angels on the wing
She wasn't much good at stickin' around--but
That girl could sing...
She could sing...
In the dead of night
She could shine a light
On some places that you've never been
In that kind of light
You could lose your sight
And believe there was something to win
You could hold her tight
With all your might
But she'd slip through your arms like the wind
And be back in flight
Back into the night
Where you might never see her again
The longer I thought I might find her
The shorter my vision became
Running in circles behind her
And thinking in terms of the blame
But she couldn't have been any kinder
If she'd come back and tried to explain
She wasn't much good a saying goodbye--but
That girl was sane

Here's my playlist for Sunday, May 16, 2010. Got to see Robert Rich play
last night at the One Thousand Pulses house concert series. It was a great
show, and met some great people there, too. The highlight of today's show
was a live interview and performance by guitarist Brian Henke, who made his
first trip ever to the Hudson Valley. Hopefully he'll be back soon.

I"m very happy to announce that guitarist Brian Henke will be my guest on Secret Music on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 9:30 AM. He's a great fingerstyle guitar player who has several albums out. He's normally from Ohio, but he's in the area for a concert Saturday May 15, 2010 at the Hyde Park Free Library with Helen Avakian and Terry Champlin. This is his first Hudson Valley appearance, so see him if you can. Here's his website for more info.

Secret Music Top 20 April 2010
Hi -
My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a
New Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is a 3700 watt non
- commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater
Hudson Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been on for over 22
years and has a large and devoted audience. The show airs every Sunday
from 9AM to 12 noon EST. For more information or to listen in online,
check out our website at www.wvkr.org. I'm always on the lookout for new
and interesting music to play on my show. If you have something you think
I'd be interested in, feel free to send it to the address below or email
me for more info. If you're a local musician or just passing through the
beautiful Hudson Valley region and you'd like to stop by for a live
interview and/or performance, drop me a line and we'll work something out.
Also, if you'd like to send me downloads of your releases in lieu of
actual CD's, that's fine with me, too. Just send me an email and let me
know. Thanks.
I have a website/blog where I post playlists, etc. Be sure to check it out
for more information. I could also use local concert information as well.
If you're a local musician, or just playing locally, send me concert info
and I'll put it up on the blog for all to see. I've even got a picture of
my new neighbors, a family of red foxes that moved in under the shed.

Lots of news this time around, so let's get right to it. First of all,
next month (June) will mark my 23rd anniversary of Secret Music. Been a
long time, and it's still exciting after all these years. If anyone has
any ideas, or someone local would like to drop by and help me celebrate,
it'd be much appreciated. Now that the weather is warmer, I'd like to do
some live interviews and/or performances. Just email me and let me know.
My friend Darren Bergstein has got quite a lineup of shows coming this
month at his house concert series, One Thousand Pulses. This Saturday, May
8, features Spyra, all the way from Germany. The following Saturday, May
15, features Robert Rich. And last but not least, on Saturday, May 22,
Northern Valentine will be playing. Lots of great electronic music of all
different types. I'll definitely be there for Spyra and Robert Rich, and
likely Northern Valentine as well. If you're going to be at any of these
shows, drop me a line and we'll meet up there. For more info and to buy
tickets, here's the website:
http://onethousandpulses.wordpress.com/
Next, I've heard that Electro-Music 2010 has a confirmed date and
site. This time around it'll be September 10-12 in Huguenot, NY (close to
Port Jervis). Three days full of all kinds of electronic music in what
promises to be a wonderful rural setting. If you're an electronic musician
and want to play, or just want to hear something new and interesting in
electronic music, this is the place to be. To me, half the fun is just
meeting people and making new friends. There's still time to participate
if you want to perform, or hold a seminar, or whatever. If any of you have
any questions about this, don't hesitate to ask. It's really a lot of fun.
Hope to see some of you there.

Featured Artists: April 2010
Here's the featured artists for April, 2010. This time around it's two artists and one label, all doing ambient music of different kinds. Enjoy.
First up is Andrew Lahiff, who I discovered a couple of years back. He's released a number of albums, and puts up individual songs for download as well. He plays ambient music with a depth and spaciness that I don't hear very often. His music doesn't seem to get a lot of attention, and I hope that changes. His new album, A Perpetual Point In Time, is very deep and rich. I hope you all check it out. As I write this, I'm downloading a new album he just put up for free download. I hope you all enjoy his music.
http://www.andrewlahiff.com/music.html
Next is Richard Skelton. I've only recently discovered his music, and I'm glad I have. He plays ambient music in more of a "classical ambient" style, or perhaps "chamber ambient". He combines acoustic instruments with electronic sounds to create something very expressive and emotional. His albums start as limited editions in handcrafted boxes, though some have made it to wider release. He records both as Richard Skelton and A Broken Consort, playing similar styles. His latest Richard Skelton release, Landings, is available on Type Records, while the latest A Broken Consort can be found on the Tompkins Square label. Here's a link to his personal website. Enjoy.
http://www.sustain-release.co.uk/
This month's label is local to me, based out of Westchester County, NY. The label is 12K, started by Taylor Deupree back in the late 90's. I knew of the label, but wasn't familiar with the music or its local connection until just recently. Their music is primarily ambient, though more of a minimalist or experimental style, exploring the boundaries of ambient sound. Some of it can be a bit too experimental for my tastes, but some of it is pretty special. Two new releases I've been playing, the Solo Andata and Tomasz Bednarczyk are available on 12K. Take a look and see for yourself.
