Hi -
Here's my playlist for Sunday, August 29, 2010. This was kind of a
special idea, sparked by a discussion in an online newsgroup (the ambient@hyperreal list)concerning women in ambient music. I've always felt that there weren't
enough of them, but lately the idea's been spinning around in my head. So
I decided to devote an entire show to it. After some dredging of my
collection, this is what I came up with. The albums and pieces played were
mostly "in the moment", with very little pre-planning. And they're not all
strictly solo artists, either. I used a few duos (and in one case a trio)
where the woman was integral to the sound, not just a supporting player.
There are old and new artists, some you might know, some you might not.
There's a few I invariably missed, though that means I'll have to do
another sometime. If I missed anyone really important, let me know. And if
you have any questions or comments, let me know. Thanks to all on the
Ambient Hyperreal list who stuck the idea in my head.

Featured Artists: August 2010
Hi -
This month I have two featured artists, one from right here in the Hudson Valley, and two record labels.
First is A Viberatto, a group based in the Hudson Valley. It features Jimmy Goodman on vibraphone, piano and synths, and a bunch of session people, including luminaries like Tony Levin and Garth Hudson. He calls it "chamber rock", though I'd call it more modern chamber music, akin to the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. I only wish the pieces were longer. Still, this is beautiful stuff. Check out the website for more info:
http://www.aviberatto.com/
Second is a man who needs little introduction in the world of ambient music, Steve Roach. He's one of the early pioneers of ambient music, having been around for well over 20 years. My discovery of his music early on certainly helped define the types of music I play on my show. He's also one of the most prolific artists, releasing several CD's a year. His newest, Sigh Of Ages, is a bit different. It's still identifiable as Steve, but it's a bit more majestic, more elegaic than usual for him. I like it a lot. For more info, check out his website.
http://www.steveroach.com/
The first record label this time around is Palace Of Lights Records. PoL has actually been around a long time, since the early 80's. It served mainly as a vehicle for the music of Kerry Leimer, but also included albums from a few others. The label vanished in the mid-80's, presumably never to be seen again. But Palace Of Lights resurfaced in 2002, with CD reissues of the early K.Leimer albums and new work as well. Since then, they've released a couple of albums a year, primarily of introspective ambient music. This time, there's three new CD's, from K.Leimer, Marc Barreca, and Gregory Taylor. All are well worth listening to. For more info, look at the website.
http://www.palaceoflights.com/
The other record label feature this month is Candy Rat Records. First, I love the name. Second, they're a label of guitar music. There are a few jazz/rock/folk albums, but primarily it's solo acoustic guitar. It's one of the few labels left that presents solo acoustic guitar music, and certainly the most innovative. There's a ton of good acoustic guitar music here from all over the globe. For more info, check out their website.

years and has a large and devoted audience. The show airs every Sunday
from 9AM to 12 noon EST. For more information or to listen in online,
check out our website at www.wvkr.org. I'm always on the lookout for new
and interesting music to play on my show. If you have something you think
I'd be interested in, feel free to send it to the address below or email
me for more info. If you're a local musician or just passing through the
beautiful Hudson Valley region and you'd like to stop by for a live
interview and/or performace, drop me a line and we'll work something out.
Also, if you'd like to send me downloads of your releases in lieu of
actual CD's, that's fine with me, too. Just send me an email and let me
know. Thanks.
I have a website/blog where I post playlists, etc. Be sure to check it
out for more information. I could also use local concert information as
well. If you're a local musician, or just playing locally, send me concert
info and I'll put it up on the blog for all to see. I've even got a
picture of my new neighbors, a family of red foxes that moved in under the

WVKR's annual fundraiser will take place in September, right after Labor
Day. That's only about 2 weeks away. This is an important time for us, as
a good portion of our operating budget comes from the fundraiser. In this
day and age, it becomes even more important. There aren't a lot of
independent radio stations left out there. I'm proud to be a part of one
of them. Please help us out by sending CD's, T-shirts, etc. that we can
use as premiums for people's donations. If you have any questions, feel
free to email me. Thanks.
Also in September is this year's Electro-Music festival. This time, it's
being held in New York in the little town of Huguenot, near Port Jervis.
It's a bit late to participate, but plenty of time left if you just want
to attend and listen to 3 days of great electronic music from all over.
All types, all genres. If you're a fan of electronic music and you're in
the NY/NJ/PA area, this is a must-see. For more info, check out the link

Upcoming Events
Here's a few upcoming events I'd like you to know about.
First, Hudson Valley native guitar player Alexander Turnquist will be opening for post rock band Slow Six on Thursday, September 9 at Club Helsinki in Hudson, NY. It's a bit of a drive for most of my listeners, and it's a Thursday night, but it's going to be a great show. For more info, go to Alexander's website:
http://alexanderturnquist.com/
Second, there's another great show coming up in the One Thousand Pulses concert series hosted by Darren Bergstein at his home in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. Coming up on Saturday, September 18 is a concert with ambient musician Jason Sloan. I'm really looking forward to this one. For more info, check out the One Thousand Pulses website:
http://onethousandpulses.wordpress.com/
Also in September is the return of the annual Electro-Music festival. This year it's September 10-12 in the town of Huguenot, New York, which is close to Port Jervis. This is always a lot of fun, with tons of performances and workshops covering the gamut of electronic music. Expect to see me there with tons of CD's in hand. For more info, check out the event website:
http://event.electro-music.com/
And last but certainly not least, WVKR is having its annual pledge drive in early September, right after Labor Day. WVKR is a non-commercial station that relies on listener donations to keep things running. If you're a label or musician, please show your support by donating CD's or other such things we can use as premiums for listener donations. If you're a listener, please listen in during my part of the fundraiser, Sunday, September 12, and call in and pledge your support for our station. We couldn't keep going without your help. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. Thanks.

Featured Artists: July 2010
This month I have two featured artists and one online store to tell you about.
The first featured artist is a duo, Mark Mahoney & Michael Peck. They hail from eastern Tennessee, and make interesting and diverse electronic music. I met them years ago at the first Electro-Music festival and became fast friends. This is their first record together in a couple of years, titled A Life Incandescent. Their music doesn't really stay in one place for very long. It's always shifting, moving, changing. This is ambient music that commands your attention. I've seen them play live before on a few occasions, and they put on a tremendous show. And they're great guys, too. Check out this website for more information:
http://waitingworldrecords.blogspot.com/
Next up is a cellist with ties to the Hudson Valley (he has family here). His name is Matthew Schoening, and he's normally from California, though when he was in the Hudson Valley recently, he took the time to come visit and talk about his new CD, Elements. It's all solo cello, recorded live in concert. He employs live looping techniques to layer his sound and make his cello sound like an ensemble. What's more interesting though is that he plays an electric cello. This gives him the flexibility to use percussive techniques similar to what many fingerstyle guitarists use. It's a wonderful album, and I highly recommend it. For more info, check out his website:
http://www.mrcelloman.com/
The last feature this month is an online download store, Musiczeit. Musiczeit started a couple of years back mainly as a source for downloadable electronic music. They've branched out into different styles of music since, but their main focus is still electronic music, and is perhaps the main download source for European electronic music. There are quite a few older albums that are out of print that have been reissued as downloads here, and newer albums that are available only as download. The prices are fair, and the service has always been great. And if you've ever ordered music from overseas (as I have many times), you'll appreciate the immediacy of downloads versus waiting for weeks for a package to arrive. I've spent quite a bit here filling holes in my collection. For more info, check out the website:

My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a
New Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is a 3700 watt non -
commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater Hudson
Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been on for over 23 years and
has a large and devoted audience. The show airs every Sunday from 9AM to
12 noon EST. For more information or to listen in online, check out our
website at www.wvkr.org. I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting
music to play on my show. If you have something you think I'd be
interested in, feel free to send it to the address below or email me for
more info.
I could also use local concert information as well. If you're a local musician, or just playing locally, send me concert info and I'll
put it up on the blog for all to see. I've even got a picture of my new
neighbors, a family of red foxes that moved in under the shed. Here's the

WVKR's annual fundraiser will take place in September, right after Labor
Day. That's only about 4 weeks away. This is an important time for us, as a good portion of our operating budget comes from the fundraiser. In this day and age, it
becomes even more important. There aren't a lot of independent radio
stations left out there. I'm proud to be a part of one of them. Please
help us out by sending CD's, T-shirts, etc. that we can use as premiums
for people's donations. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.
Thanks.
Also in September is this year's Electro-Music festival. This time, it's
being held in New York in the little town of Huguenot, near Port Jervis. It's a bit late to participate, but plenty of time left if you just want to attend and listen
to 3 days of great electronic music from all over. All types, all genres.
If you're a fan of electronic music and you're in the NY/NJ/PA area, this
is a must-see. For more info, check out the link below.
