Secret Music News, July 2014
Hi -
My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a
New Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is a 3700 watt
non-commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College to the greater
Hudson Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been on for over 27
years and has a large and devoted audience. The show airs every Sunday
from 9AM to 12 noon EST. For more information or to listen in online,
check out our website at www.wvkr.org.
I'm always looking for new and interesting music to play. If you have
something you think I'd be interested in, feel free to send it to the address below. I'm perfectly
fine with downloads instead of CD's, especially for all you overseas
people who pay large sums of money to mail things here to the states. I
usually prefer high quality MP3's, though I can accept other formats if
necessary. Just send me an email for more info. At least half of what I
play these days comes to me through downloads. Thanks.
So much has happened since my last email. Lots to catch you up on.
First, I went silent for a while in June and July. Not my fault, really. The gist of it is that
horrendous computer/network issues kept me from accessing email for a
couple of weeks. I didn't lose any data, but hardware was replaced. All is
well, at least for the moment. If I missed someone along the line, I'm
sorry. Wasn't much I could do.
June had a couple of nice events. First, I celebrated 27 years of Secret
Music. Doesn't seem like that long ago, really. So much time has passed, so many changes
in the music business. But there's still a lot of great music out there
and wonderful people who make the music and more wonderful people who
listen to my show. I celebrated by playing local music to honor the
community that has supported me for so long. And also in June, I hosted
Peter Calandra for an interview. A really nice guy and great musician.
There are a whole bunch of great live concerts coming to the area in
July and August. Some big names, and some really interesting performances. I hope some of you in
the area can make it out to a show or two. Check out this link for more
information.
http://www.secretmusicwvkr.blogspot.com/2014/07/upcoming-concerts.html
If any of you out there happen to be in the area and want to stop by for
an interview or to perform live, I'd love to have you here. I'm always looking for interviews
and/or performances from interesting people. Send me an email and we'll
work something out. For more info or weekly playlists, check out my
website below. I'm also on Facebook, so look for me there too. Here's my
top 20 playlist for June, 2014. Enjoy!

Upcoming concerts
Hi -
Here's some info on upcoming concerts that should be of interest to my listeners. Hope you can make it to some of these. I'm going to try and make as many of these as I can. Some great shows coming up.
Saturday, July 26, 2014, 5-7 pm: Ben Neill performs at Manitoga, Garrison, NY
Ben Neill is a local musician and composer who works with an instrument of his own devising called the mutantrumpet, which is a trumpet with multiple bells and fitted with electronic controls. He will be performing a new piece at Manitoga, an outdoor venue which is also the Russell Wright design center. I honestly don't know what this will sound like, but Ben is a great musician and Manitoga is a wonderful outdoor space. This is one of those events you need to see to believe. Here's some links to more info:

Sunday, July 27, 2014, 7:30pm: Altan performs at the Towne Crier Cafe, Beacon, NY
Altan is a wonderful Irish group that has been around for over 30 years. I've played their music on my show before. If you like Irish music, this is a must see. And the new Towne Crier space is wonderful. My congratulations to Phil Ciganer for creating such a wonderful concert space. Here's a link to more info:

Thursday, July 31, 2014, 8:30pm - David Torn and Dean Sharp perform at Quinns in Beacon, NY
David Torn is a well known guitarist and ECM recording artist, and Dean Sharp joins him on drums. This is going to be a wild show. David is exceptionally talented. A rare chance to see him in a small space. Here's a link to more info:

Friday, August 15, 2014, 9pm: Belew, Levin, Mastellato, Reuter perform at the Bearsville Theater, Woodstock, NY
Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Pat Mastellato, Markus Reuter and friends. This is going to be a prog rock funfest. They're running a retreat for musicians in the Catskills that week and this is the culmination of those efforts. This is a must for prog rock fans. Here's a link to more info:

Saturday, August 16. 9pm: David Rothenberg and Markus Reuter perform at Quinns in Beacon, NY
David Rothenberg is a local horn player and Markus Reuter is a well known touch guitar player who has played in a variety of groups all over the world. This is a rare chance to catch Markus on a small local stage. I'm not sure what it'll sound like, but it'll be great. Here's a link to more info:

Friday, August 29 and Saturday August 30, times vary: Liz Story and Lisa Downing perform in CT and MA
These shows are pretty far away, but these are a rare chance to see Liz Story in concert. She is a great person and incredible piano player. Lisa Downing is also a talented piano player. The Friday show will be in Old Saybrook, CT and will also feature a performance by Will Ackerman, guitarist and founder of Windham Hill Records. Well worth the drive. The Saturday performance is in Northampton, MA and just features Liz and Lisa. Here's a link to more info:

Secret Music Playlists, June 2014
Hi -
My apologies for the long delay in getting these out. The last month has
been a technological nightmare. Faulty computers, faulty programs, faulty router,
you name it, it's been malfunctioning in the last month. Fortunately,
nothing was lost. Just a big fat pain. Everything seems to be working fine
now (new desktop and new router later), and time to get caught up. Here's
my playlists for June, 2014. Enjoy!
